Photoscot Scanning Packages:

The Standard Scanning Package is recommended for most customers

The aim of the standard package is to back up your slides, negatives or prints with as much detail as is in the original slides or negatives so that you can use them for printing at say 6 inches by 9 inches, (a convenient size for putting in an A4 mount or frame).

The standard package includes the following:

  • scan at 1200dpi to produce files of approx 4 to 6 megapixels, which require between 350Kb and 1.4Mb of storage space (depending on the level of detail in the picture.)
  • crop manually to remove edges of slide mount left over from automatic cropping
  • remove small dust specks automatically from selected light areas such as the sky, without removing detail from important areas of photo such as faces, which will remain unaffected
  • remove large dust specks manually, especially from faces
  • save as medium quality jpg file
  • files named by a sequential number - you are advised to rename them yourself, as only you can decide what appropriate names are.
  • A backup of your files will be kept for two months, during which time you may request a further copy of your scans.
  • The cost per 35mm full-frame mounted slide with 36x24mm film is 75p per slide
  • 80p per 35mm negative (since negatives are more difficult to handle).
  • 80p per 35mm mounted slide with 24x24mm film or 36x36mm film (as square shapes are not recognised automatically and must be cropped manually)
  • The cost for 120 or medium format (6x6 or 6x7cm) negatives would be £1.50 per negative
  • There is a a minimum charge of £9.

Photoscot Enhanced Scanning Package - including the standard package above. £2 per individual scan.

The aim is to prepare slides for publication, and includes everything in the Standard package above, plus:

  • scan at 2400 dpi to produce files suitable for printing at up to A4 or 8" by 10" size.
  • rotate if necessary to straighten horizon or other obvious tilt, (unless this would remove important detail.)
  • remove dust and major scratches manually so that it is not obvious at 50% scale (this is much more work than removing dust at 25% scale)
  • colour correct automatically if necessary, but only if it is an improvement on the scanned image
  • crop artistically for publishing or the web if necessary
  • save as highest quality sRGB jpg for use on the computer or on the web, or as a compressed tif in Adobe RGB colour space for printing - you choose one of these formats.
  • files named according to a number or label on each slide

Photoscot Professional Scanning Package - including the standard and enhanced packages above - £4 per individual scan:

The aim is to prepare photos to the highest standard, e.g. for a photo agency. This service is suitable for small numbers of slides, since each slide is scanned individually to ensure optimum quality:

  • scan at 4800 dpi, producing a file of approximately 24 mpix, printable at up to A3
  • remove dust and scratches manually so that they are not obvious at 100% scale
  • remove small imperfections such as small areas of colour from fading, coloured spots or fungus growth
  • manually adjust colour, contrast, brightness if necessary, e.g. to counteract as much as possible the fading of originals

This service does not include removal of undesirable objects in a picture, or retouching in any way, e.g. removal of vignetting or
removal of highlight rings caused by using a mirror lens, or patching a torn photo together and interpolating missing picture data.
If such services are required, this is more expensive, as it requires judgement and discussion with the customer, and may cost up to £15 per scan, which will pay for one hour's work.

Scale of Charges:

There is an minimum charge of £9, thereafter a pro rata charge depending on the number of slides, negatives or prints (see below).

Because of the variability of the scanning jobs, we work in "scannerfuls".

A scannerful is up to:

  • 12 35mm slides
  • 20 35mm negative or transparency filmstrip (i.e. unmounted, normally in strips of 4 or 6 negatives or transparencies)
  • 6 6x6cm (2.25" square) negatives or slides
  • 6 frames of 6x6cm filmstrip - negatives or slides
  • 4 glass plate or film negatives of 120 format (6cm x 9cm)
  • 2 glass plate negatives of 5" x 7" format
  • 1 Kodak disc film with 12 exposures
  • 2 A5 or 1 A4 print.
