Magpie (Pica pica) perched in a Common Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) tree during the nest building process, taken by David Palmar. The breeding pair will usually remain on territory through winter. They can also reuse an old nest by adding material to it in following years. Magpie eggs are pale greenish-blue and are around 24mm by 34mm in size according to British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) field guides. The nictitating membrane (also known as the third eyelid) can be seen in this individual.
