Full-day Beginners Level Digital Photography Workshop for IFLI at RSPB Skinflats - Saturday 17th June 2017

Full-day Intermediate Level Digital Photography Workshop for IFLI at Bo'ness Library - Sunday 18th June 2017

Learn how to take great outdoor and wildlife photographs with your own camera then see your results on screen. Advice, encouragement and ideas from experienced photographer David Palmar.
Booking essential - only through the IFLI office at Skinflats (see booking details below), and not through this site.

Programme with approximate timings (may be altered depending on circumstances on the day):

  • 10.00 - Meet at the venue and introduce yourself to the other people.
  • 10.15 - 11.00 - Introductory digital side show, to explore the possibilities, and suggest some techniques, and look at what equipment you have brought.
  • 11.00 - 13.00 - Leisurely walk round the area, stopping to discuss and photograph whatever we feel like, with packed lunch outside or inside, depending on the weather.
  • 13.30 - 16.00 - Further photography walk, followed by a slide show of people's photographs, and question and answer session.

It would beneficial to all concerned if participants are willing to allow their photos to be projected to the group at the end of the walk, in order to provide helpful comments and generate discussion.
It would be helpful if anyone who normally shoots RAW could shoot RAW+jpg for the day to enable your pictures to be projected easily as jpgs.

Please note that the event is very unlikely to be cancelled because of weather (it has never happened yet!), and in that event an inclement weather programme will run, which will involve a walk, perhaps shorter than normal, and some indoor photography and / or discussion.

The subjects for photography can include, depending on where we go:

  • trees, bark patterns, lichen, foliage and any available colour
  • fungi - there are lots of bracket fungi; other fungi may emerge nearer the time
  • butterflies and moths (if you're quick enough)
  • plants - there should be plenty of flowers for closeup views
  • birdlife - there should be birds on the water, (but you'll need a good zoom)
  • Because of the range of photographic subjects available, advance planning will result in some suggestions for 'set pieces' to photograph, but there will be enough flexibility for people to spend some time photographing what they like.

The Beginners' workshop is designed for any kind of digital camera - SLR, compact or bridge camera.
The Intermediate Workshop is designed for SLR users.
However, if you can only make it on the "wrong" day, just come anyway and you will be welcome and get help with whatever kind of camera you have.

What to Bring:

  • warm waterproof clothing
  • digital camera with fully charged battery, and enough space on your memory card to store the pictures you take
  • your camera's manual if you think you'll need help wth anything obscure
  • something to protect your camera in case of inclement weather
  • something to lie on, (e.g. if you are wanting to take a shot at ground level)
  • optionally, you might consider bringing:
    • a monopod, walking pole or bean bag to steady your camera, or even a tripod (if you can be bothered carrying it).
    • binoculars if you want to watch birds

Booking a place:

Please book through the IFLI office at Skinflats, to ensure that there is a place for you on these free workshops.
The number of people will be limited to 12, to allow a reasonable possibility of getting individual help Although you need to book with IFLI, I would appreciate an email to the address on the Contact Us page, to let us know that you have booked, and what equipment you have.

If you have to cancel, please let IFLI know in case there is someone else who is on the waiting list and can take up the place, and we know not to wait for you.

You can book using the contact details at the IFLI events calendar website, by phoning the IFLI office on 01324 831 568 or email info@innerforthlandscape.co.uk.
