Found throughout the British Isles, Sanicle (Sanicula europaea) is mostly found in deciduous woods on damp calcareous soils. Flowers appear from May to August and are usually a pinkish colour. This picture was taken on the slopes above the Kelvin Walkway opposite the Botanic Gardens, Glasgow.

In Scotland Chickweed Wintergreen grows on acidic, organic soil in pine, birch and oak woodlands. The plant ranges from 5 to 20cm in height and the stem is unbranched, usually with one or two white/reddish flowers. The leaves are thin and form a rosette around the stem. Chickweed Wintergreen (Lysimachia europaea, formerly Trientalis europaea) on Butterfly Conservation Scotland's nature reserve at Allt Mhuic, Loch Arkaig, taken by David Palmar. Chickweed Wintergreen is confusingly named, since it is neuther a Chickweed (the Pink family - Caryophyllaceae) nor a Wintergreen (family Pyrolaceae), but belongs to the Primrose family Primulaceae.
